The Santa Maria Creek Greenway (SMCG) has been a vision of Ramona Trails Association for decades. As the community looked to how it wanted to grow and prosper, the SMCG began to garner more interest as an amenity for the community, providing a connection
through the town, out to through the Ramona Grasslands, and reaching to the San Dieguito River Park, potentially creating a world class non-motorized trail loop to the benefit of all.
The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation has worked with the SMCG committee and have been successful in including the SMCG in the 24-25 county budget. Those funds are being used to create and overarching plan of the greenway, to provide outreach to the community to garner support and suggestions, and to implement on the ground improvements.
The latest public outreach slide presentation, held Oct '25, can be viewed here: https://www.sdparks.org/content/dam/sdparks/en/plans/santa-maria-creek-greenway/FINAL_10.29.25%20SMCG%20Meeting%20Presentation.pdf. Monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month, 4-5pm at the Ramona Community Center. Everyone is welcome.

There was a time when this 5,000 acres of ranch land was proposed to be a housing development of ranchettes, with 20 miles of public trails, a conference center and other amenities. It failed due to F rated road
access and high degree of fire danger. During this era, Ramona Trails Association held a number of trail-related special events, with the owner’s permission. It was a bed and breakfast for a while. The property was
considered for purchase by State and County agencies, with the California Fish and Wildlife Department obtaining the property. Ramona Trails Association seeks to work with CA Fish and Wildlife to increase public access to non-motorized
recreational trail use and environmental education to youth in our community, using existing ranch roads and respecting the conservation protocols within the reserve.
