Our History

Incorporated in 1989, Ramona Trails Association (RTA) is an all volunteer, nonprofit public

benefit organization that is proud to represent all non-motorized trail users.

We are funded by membership dues, donations and fundraising efforts.

RTA is a 501c3 and donations are tax deductible.

Equestrians, bicyclists, hikers and supporters join together to have fun and work toward the

common goal of trail advocacy, designation, development, maintenance, and use. RTA has

been successful in planning and creating over 50 miles of trails in the greater Ramona

region.

Ramona was the first unincorporated community to have an approved plan in San Diego

County. The Ramona Community Trails and Pathways Master Plan is our guide to help

ensure trails and pathways get on the ground. Accepted and adopted by the County of San

Diego in 2005 as a part of the County Trails Master Plan (CTMP), it provides a

comprehensive guide to create a cohesive and connected community using non-motorized

means of travel and to provide recreational opportunities throughout the region. However, in

recent years the County Trails Master Plan not been recognized by the County as land use

planning document.

The CTMP was a plan developed by 18 unincorporated communities to create a system of

interconnected regional and community trails and pathways. These trails and pathways are

intended to address an established public need for recreation and transportation, but will

also provide health and quality of life benefits associated with hiking, biking, and horseback

riding throughout the County's biologically diverse environments.

Our current focus is in advocating for the Santa Maria Creek Greenway; the increased

access to Old Survey Road 97 and its connection to the San Dieguito River Park; and the

increased public access to the large open space of Canada de San Vicente.

RTA continues to help maintain the trails within the Ramona Community Park and have a

storage container and picnic area within the park.
